Restart your internet the right way

Cable, fiber, 5G and business networks each restart differently.

Cable (Spectrum, including former Cox)

Unplug the modem and router for 60 seconds. Plug the modem in first and wait for steady lights, then the router.

Fiber (AT&T, Frontier, Google Fiber, open-access providers)

Unplug the router and the fiber box (ONT). Wait a minute. Power the fiber box first, then the router. Don't touch the thin fiber cord.

5G home internet

Unplug for a minute. If speeds are poor afterward, try a window facing the nearest tower and check signal in the app.

Business networks

Outside in: modem or ONT, firewall, switches, access points. Confirm failover worked.

Restart, don't reset. The reset pinhole erases your settings.

Rebooting a lot? A battery backup prevents power-blip dropouts.
